The Detroit Institute of Arts is running a fun photo contest in conjunction with its Inside/?Out exhibition, a community-driven national event in which reproductions from the museum’s collection are displayed in dozens of outdoor venues in surrounding neighborhoods.

Instagram is the platform for Inside/?OutUSA Photo Contest, which runs from June 9-12, kicking off with an Instameet event from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. June 9 in Lafayette Park. The DIA is participating with five other museums in the country, including the Akron Art Museum.

Here’s how it works: Take a photo while exploring the Inside/?Out works in the participating communities, and post it to Instagram with the tags @DIADetroit and #InsideOutUSA. The contest closes just before midnight June 12.

DIA curators will choose a local winner, which will be announced June 15. The winner will be a contestant in the national contest, and that winner will be announced June 22.

The June 9 kickoff will include a walking tour of works in the area and a history of the neighborhood, followed by discounts on food and drink at local businesses in the Eastern Market district.

The DIA created the Inside/?Out concept in 2010, and it expanded nationally to other museums in 2015. This year, more than 100 reproduction pieces have been installed through July 16 in 11 neighborhoods, including Farmington, Brighton, and Novi. The artworks are displayed within walking or bike-riding distances in each community.

A second Inside/?Out wave will be installed from Aug. 1 through Oct. 31 in 10 new venues.

There is a complete list of participating communities, more information, and interactive maps at dia.org/?insideout.
