The Blanco County WW2 Museum recently received an extensive collection of WW2 posters from the Blanco Retreat, LLC, to complement the Blanco Home Front portion of the Museum’s exhibits. The collection contains over 25 original posters that typified the American effort at swaying and informing the American people.

“We’re delighted to be able to add to the story of Blanco County through this display,” said Ruth Johnson, President and CEO of the Blanco Retreat. “This exceptional collection offers a view of what people here were experiencing as America rallied for the war effort.”

While propaganda is often associated with being a tactic of the enemy, WW2 became a total commitment for the country and the creative talents of American artists were brought to bear. From such renowned painters as Norman Rockwell to relatively obscure artists, there was a continual stream of imagery to support the cause. War Bonds, scrap metal drives, and various patriotic messages were issued in regular doses to the American people throughout the war and guests are invited to see these images to get a better understanding of what life was like back in that era.

As an update on the continuing mystery surrounding the USS Blanco County, the reason for the naming of the ship is still an unknown. On a positive note, thanks to the diligence of Retta Martin and Blanco Historic Preservation, documents regarding the transfer of the ship’s artifacts were finally located. It appears that two items, the communications piping and the plotting board, are still missing. It was also interesting to learn that there has been a requirement to keep the US Navy informed on the location of the items and that process is now being adhered to.

The Blanco County WW2 Museum is a part of the Buggy Barn Complex located on North 281. The Museum complex is in the process of a major expansion with former satellite building from the school being fitted out as period theme displays. The Buggy Barn Complex is a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to providing education and preservation of equine transportation and related historical perspectives.
