From King Tut to ancient ice mummies, the myths and legends of ancient mummification continue to fascinate the living. However, next month at the Cincinnati Museum Center, they’re separating fact from fiction with the Mummies of the World exhibit.

Organizers expect it to be one of the highest attended cultural events in greater Cincinnati, estimating more than 1.2 million people will visit through the exhibit’s run.

Mummies have been found on every continent, providing insight into past cultures and civilizations.

The Mummies of the World exhibit features artifacts from 12 institutions across the world, creating what could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for visitors to experience real mummies.

“Studying Egyptian mummies has allowed us to find out that prostate cancer goes back to the ancient Egyptians,” Gene Kritsky, PHD, Professor and Chair at Mount St. Joe University told WLWT News 5. “We're seeing the same cardiovascular diseases that we see in our society today in ancient Egyptian mummies.”

Natural and intentional preservations can be seen at the exhibit, offering time capsules on culture and heath. In addition, each one tells a story, giving museum visitors a journey around the world.

"Mummies are such a fascination, but there's really great science around this,” Douglass McDonald, president and CEO of the Museum Center said. “This is a great way to find an enjoyable way to tell children and families and learn about our past.”

So if you're fascinated by the science of embalming and want to come face to face with the largest collections of mummies ever assembled, take a journey back into ancient civilizations at the Cincinnati Museum Center.
