Lindsey M Hansen
Associate Registrar, Permanent Collections at The Huntington
About
I have worked in the Huntington’s Art Collections in various capacities for the past 6 years, assisting the Head of Collections, registrars, curators, publications and the Head of Exhibitions. I have taken on a wide range of projects during that time, most notably acting as special project registrar for the installation of a large collection of early American folk art in new constructed gallery space. This several-year project required deinstallation, temporary storage and reinstallation of objects in existing galleries in preparation for construction and renovation. During that time, I was responsible for coordinating object movement, supervising packing/handling, and storage according to best practices. For the incoming collection, I was responsible for condition reports of 250 plus objects, coordinating packing, cross-country shipping, photography, and installation of the objects in the newly built gallery space.
During my time at the Huntington, I have acted as courier, coordinated treatments with on-staff and contract conservators, drafted/maintained exhibition checklists, pulled artwork for researchers, inventory, accessioned new acquisitions, rehoused objects, and coordinated sales with an auction house. I started new systems to improve efficient work flow, for example, implementing Articheck for condition reporting and developing a shared calendar to track installation projects across campus and the art handlers’ schedule. Most recently, I have been responsible for coordinating many exhibition and collections-related publications between authors and publisher, including securing rights and reproductions, arranging photography of objects, and editing content.
I am a quick and inquisitive learner and can work well in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. I scrutinize details and strive for efficient organization. My educational background in art gives me daily enthusiasm for the field of collections management, as well as a deep respect for the objects themselves and all those entrusted with its care.
