2025 Emergency Webinar Series January 27-March 24, 2025

Collection Emergencies are a common occurrence at cultural institutions ranging in type, scope, and severity. Emergencies will continue to increase as the climate changes, buildings age, and reduced funds put a strain on our institutions. During this five-part workshop series, registrars, collection specialists, and other museum professionals will be presented with in-depth training on collections emergency preparedness and response.

This series will utilize recordings from 2021-2023 Emergency Webinar Series presentations which registrants will receive, along with resource materials, in advance of a 30-minute open discussion with the original speakers. This new format is in an attempt to ensure that information from the presentations can be thoroughly reviewed ahead of the discussion and that participants have ample time to present questions to the speakers.

Fall 2024 Recipients

Congratulations to our Fall Internship Recipients: Violeta Kovalenko, Hrishita Ghosh, and Leah DeHaan. Watch our Instagram account for their take-overs later this month!!

Violeta Kovalenko, Louisiana State University

I am a dedicated 20-year-old student from Ukraine, currently finishing the Art History degree at Louisiana State University, graduating in Fall 2024. My passion lies in museum studies, and I am deeply committed to exploring the nuances of art conservation. As a recipient of the Fall 2024 Stipend for my internship at LSU Museum of Art, I am thrilled to work with the registrar team, assisting with the management and preservation of the museum’s extensive collection. I have not previously had any experience in museum operations, and I am beyond excited to start building my skills in this field. This internship presented me a unique opportunity to dive into the exploration of the behind-the-curtain museum world. The stipend has aided me in comfortably combining studying and working in my desired field, as well as gaining precious hands-on experience, during my last semester at the university. I look forward to contributing to the museum’s mission as I pursue my professional journey in the art history and museum studies field.

Hrishita Ghosh, Stanford University

I am currently pursuing a PhD program in Archaeology at the Stanford Department of Anthropology. I am also a Collections Management intern at the Stanford University Archaeology Centre, primarily focusing on studying object conditions, preparing object inventories, and housing objects for future conservation. During my graduation from the Department of Archaeology, University of Calcutta, I took up a Museology elective course which spawned an interest in one simple question: What happens to artefacts after we, the archaeologists, have studied it in details? Through my personal engagement with artefact collections at different levels- from small community collections stashed in dingy rooms of school buildings in rural east India to the massive Indian Museum in Kolkata and the meticulously maintained collections at SUAC, I have navigated this question in both its theoretical and practical aspects. I believe that the museum can become more effective spaces for identity building for communities through a de-centralization of the dominant position held by disciplinary experts. Community education and public archaeology can connect the public with the scholarship to provide a more wholesome understanding of object collections. The internship at SUAC has, therefore, helped me hone skills and learn about the logistical mechanisms that I hope to take back to South Asia, to connect with the public and help them preserve their heritage while also helping them gain global representation and connectivity.

Leah DeHaan, North Dakota State University

I am so excited to have received the ARCS internship stipend! I am in my second year at North Dakota State University in Fargo where I am majoring in public history. Making history accessible to the average person has always been a goal of mine throughout my studies and my internship at the Emily Reynolds Historic Costume Collection has given me an opportunity to do exactly that. I am working under the collections manager, Susan Curtis, and I am so grateful for everything she has to teach me.
