Collections management is built on a foundation of best practices, yet adherence to these principles is never assured. We often have to manage collections in frustrating circumstances, leaky storage spaces, hazardous collections materials, poor environmental controls, dismissive managers. Achieving excellence is often hindered by aging buildings, inefficient bureaucracy, and competing priorities. Explore ways to communicate collections needs to other staff, both within and outside museums, and learn how to use small grants and low-cost solutions to bring attention to preservation challenges. Discuss strategies for coping with potential burn-out. Hear from three mid-level collections professionals from city- and state-run history museums.
