Faced with unprecedented changes and difficulty in collections care, many cultural institutions are confronted with new or increased ethical, legal, and procedural conundrums as they consider the practical implications of the recent Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) statement on the use of deaccession funds and direct care. Join Anne Young, Jennifer Rigsby, and Robin Lawrence as they present a case study on the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields’ approach to rewriting their deaccession policy in 2019 to include clearly defined direct care language, the legal and ethical considerations at play, the institution’s tactic of consistent deaccessioning, and the steps to get such changes and processes updated, approved, and implemented at your institution.
