The ARCS Education Programming Sub-Committee is hosting a well-being webinar series aimed at developing skills in self-care and self-advocacy for museum professionals. The 2-part series will include: 

Part 1: Put On Your Oxygen Mask First: Prioritizing Self-Care for Arts and Museum Professionals
Speaker: Dorothée King

Date: July 13th, 2022
Time: 1:00-2:00pm ET

This webinar with Dorothée King is for everyone who works and leads in a museum or arts environment and will focus on the well-being of staff in the arts/museum field. This session will include short exercises designed to identify stressors, develop skills in self-care, setting limits/boundaries, and making everyday decisions that will contribute to greater fulfillment, and possibly result in less burn-out or bore-out, at the workplace. King will show how individuals, when daring to step out of “giving paths,” not only develop personally but will also bring their open-mindedness to their teams and workplace. 

In this session, three aspects will be discussed in detail, illustrated with examples, and offered with self-coaching questions:

  1. Let’s not shy away from “tall poppy syndrome.”
  2. Let’s celebrate JOMO (Joy of Missing Out) to make more time for our own wellbeing.
  3. Let’s focus on sustainable workloads and supportive networks.

Part 2 (Re)Discovering and Advocating for Yourself

In the midst of being overworked or overwhelmed, juggling too many tasks and not enough hours, we don't often take time to reflect on ourselves, what we bring to our work, and how to be our own best advocates. If you are looking for a job, just getting started in the field, striving to succeed at work, dealing with a career transition, this practical session will help you build clarity and confidence as you (re)discover your strengths, passions, and values, and communicate them to the world! 

In this session you will:

  1. Get started on identifying your strengths/skills, passions, and values
  2. Start to translate your strengths, passions, and values into “pillars” to help you clarify and  communicate your professional self at work or in job application materials
  3. Craft a preliminary action plan of steps you will take toward building career clarity and confidence.

Speaker Bios

Dorothée King (Ph.D.) is an organization and personal development specialist in the cultural sector. She writes about contemporary artistic practices, multi-sensory aesthetic experiences, participation in the museum, personal and organizational development. As a speaker, she gives insights into well-being in cultural institutions. Her intelligent speeches and mindfulness interventions are humorous invitations to creatively shape one's own life and work environment, to learn from the arts, and to engage in dialogue with the world at eye level. Since 2000, she consults cultural institutions and individuals as an educator, personal and organizational development expert. Currently Dorothée is the head of the Arts and Design Education Institute at the University for Arts and Design in Basel, Switzerland. Since 2000 she has been working globally as a coach, educator, and communicator. Among other places she worked and taught with RISD and the RISD museum / Rhode Island USA, UdK Berlin, Haus der Kulturen der Welt / Berlin, Ars Electronica / Austria, Kunstuniversität Linz / Austria, Banff Center for the Arts / Canada, and the Transart Institute /New York. Dorothée holds a Ph.D. in Arts Education (Berlin University of the Arts), a MA in Media Arts (University of Portsmouth, GB), and a BA in Communication Design (Merz Akademie, Germany).  She is a certified Life Coach (DBCA Berlin/Zurich Switzerland), Playing Big Facilitator (with Tara Mohr, San Francisco, US), Meditation Teacher, and qualified Yoga Teacher (Jivamukti Yoga New York, Spirit Yoga Berlin).

Greg Stevens is principal of Purple Cow Career and Talent Development, with dozens of clients across sectors and career stages, and over 500 professional coaching hours. Greg is committed to helping colleagues rediscover their strengths and skills, get unstuck, and find meaning in their professional lives, recognizing that we can all benefit from guidance about getting started, navigating workplace culture, moving up or moving on, and staying professionally engaged In addition to his coaching work, Greg is currently director of the Master of Arts in Museum Professions program at Seton Hall University. Previously, from 2007-2017, Greg directed the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) Professional Development program, through which he addressed career management, leadership development, and professional skills-building for museum colleagues. Prior to AAM, Greg held positions at the National Museum of the U.S. Army, Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums, National Building Museum, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, and Kellogg Performing and Visual Arts School. Greg co-edited (with Wendy Luke) A Life in Museums: Managing Your Museum Career (2012, The AAM Press), has written numerous articles and book chapters on career management and museum practice, and facilitates seminars and workshops on career and leadership topics. Greg earned his M.A.T. in Museum Education from The George Washington University and his B.A. in Theatre from San Diego State University.
