The Missoula Art Museum continues its Late Thursday series—a free, monthly event held every third Thursday that invites the community to experience art after hours in a lively and welcoming atmosphere. This month’s edition, Late Thursday: Kaneko Reveal, will highlight the museum’s newest acquisition: a monumental ceramic sculpture known as a Dango by internationally acclaimed artist Jun Kaneko.

On Thursday, August 21, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, MAM offers visitors a rare opportunity to engage with Kaneko’s powerful artistic vision up close. The addition of this striking work marks a significant expansion of MAM’s contemporary art collection.

Guests are invited to enjoy fresh sushi served on one of Kaneko’s sushi platters from the MAM Collection while DJ Mark Myriad spins an eclectic mix of funky beats. A no-host bar will be available, and attendees are encouraged to explore the galleries, connect with fellow art lovers, and enjoy a vibrant evening of art, music, and community.

Jun Kaneko’s Dangos—named after the Japanese word for dumplings—are among the largest free-standing ceramic sculptures in the world. MAM’s new Dango stands at 102.5 inches tall and weighs 1,582 pounds. The piece exemplifies Kaneko’s concept of “spiritual scale,” referring to the ability of large-scale artworks to create powerful, contemplative experiences for viewers. Members of the Autio Family, close friends with the Kanekos, will be on hand to share their recent visit to the Kaneko Studio in Omaha.

The newly acquired Dango was generously gifted by longtime MAM supporters Pat and Jeff Aresty and stands as one of the most significant additions to the museum’s collection. The Arestys have played a vital role in shaping MAM’s holdings, and this extraordinary gift reflects their unwavering commitment to bringing world-class contemporary art to Missoula. The Dango will remain on long-term view as a signature piece welcoming visitors to the museum. MAM extends its heartfelt thanks to Pat and Jeff Aresty for their generosity and vision.

Thank you also to Wolf Magritte for donating their world-renowned expertise in art handling and installation. The Kaneko is on long term view due to their professionalism and care.

Kaneko’s Dango is a highlight of MAM’s Collection, and a striking symbol of the museum’s commitment to contemporary art and community engagement.
