Potentially explosive cannonballs were found today in the collections of the Castine Historical Society and the Wilson Museum in Castine.
The Castine historical director and collections manager discovered two unexploded War of 1812 Black Powder cannonballs in their collections storage.
They alerted the Maine State Police who sent members of the bomb squad to Castine to properly and safely dispose of them.
After looking at the collection, the bomb squad felt an additional larger cannonball could be explosive and took that one as well.
Knowing the Wilson Museum has cannonballs in their collection, the Castine historical society reached out to them and the bomb squad team went across town to check on their collection.
