Dear Colleagues,
Collections Stewardship of the American Alliance of Museums (CS-AAM) and the Association of Registrars and Collections Specialists (ARCS) are proud to announce and distribute the new Code of Ethics and Professional Practices for Collections Professionals. The document was revised and updated over the course of the last year by a joint task force of CS-AAM and ARCS. Both organizations, and AAM, endorsed the changes and approved this new document at the end of February 2021.
The Code of Ethics for Registrars was last updated in 1984. The field of collections care and museums in general have undergone massive changes since that time. In order to remain relevant for the current environment, the document needed to be made as broad and inclusive as possible while offering ethical guidance for collections professionals.
A copy of the new Code of Ethics and Professional Practices accompanies this announcement. The document can also be found on the AAM website (opens in a new window), the ARCS website, and the CS-AAM website.
The Code of Ethics task force will be presenting on the updates and changes at the upcoming AAM virtual conference. This will be our opportunity to learn more about the work they did and how the document affects our field.
We want to thank the task force that came together to create this important document. It was critical for us to make these changes, and the team of Karen DePauw, Sofía Galarza Liu, Anisha Gupta, Elise V. LeCompte, and Anne Young did an amazing job. They were further assisted by Tiffany Charles, Kathryn Haigh, John Simmons, and Cherie Summers who served as reviewers.
We welcome any thoughts, questions, and comments.
Thank you.
