Social Media A proper use of digital media is key to achieving communication objectives. Social networks such as X, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, and TikTok each have their own codes that must be understood and utilized to our advantage. In this webinar, we will focus on analyzing the digital communication strategies of the Museo del Prado, with particular attention to its video strategy on Instagram and TikTok. These strategies have generated millions of views and a loyal community that follows them daily.

While social networks amplify successes, they magnify errors even more. Mistakes attract more attention than successes, and the algorithms are aware of this. The formats of certain networks foster misunderstandings and make it difficult to convey complex ideas. Therefore, we will also examine the risks associated with using specific social networks and strategies to anticipate potential crises.

Emergency This virtual workshop provides a hands-on simulation of the recovery of cross-discipline museum objects from a water damage salvage event. In order to participate fully, participants will be asked to obtain low-value objects to represent museum objects with which to simulate a risk-free water emergency. Participants will learn how to: handle and safely remove various objects in water or other compromised positions; triage the objects to assess for damage, such as material weakness, dye transfer, or mold growth; and clean, stabilize, or otherwise treat the objects for long term preservation. The class will cover a wide variety of object types, including: textiles; ceramics; wood; metal; various natural history specimens; and various examples of paper (books, magazines, photographs).

A list of supplies to purchase or obtain will be provided to participants prior to the class. Participants will get the most out of this workshop if they are able to complete the hands on activities; however, all participants are welcome to listen in.

Oral History: item, record

In this webinar, we’ll talk about how oral histories enrich collections and the unique opportunities they present as items and records. From artists’ accounts of their work and processes to conservators’ techniques and donors’ stories, and from paper transcripts to video files, oral histories serve many functions in GLAM collections and present challenges for access and discoverability. Over the course of the session, we’ll talk about the life cycle of an oral history, the ethical considerations in conducting and maintaining interviews, and how oral histories can augment GLAM work across several dimensions.

Featuring: Metropolitan Stories by Christine Coulson

Join us in the evening for an informal yet engaging exploration of Metropolitan Stories, Christine Coulson’s collection of connected short stories about artworks and their caretakers, inspired by her 25-year tenure at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

“Hidden behind the Picassos and Vermeers, the Temple of Dendur and the American Wing, exists another world: the hallways and offices, conservation studios, storerooms, and cafeteria that are home to the museum’s devoted and peculiar staff of 2,200 people--along with a few ghosts.

A surreal love letter to this private side of the Met, Metropolitan Stories unfolds in a series of amusing and poignant vignettes in which we discover larger-than-life characters, the downside of survival, and the powerful voices of the art itself. The result is a novel bursting with magic, humor, and energetic detail, but also a beautiful book about introspection, an ode to lives lived for art, ultimately building a powerful collage of human experience and the world of the imagination."

Christine Coulson began her career at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1991 as a

summer intern in the European Paintings Department. She returned in 1994 and, over the next 25 years, rose through the ranks of the Museum, working in the Development Office, the Director’s Office, and the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts.”

Works of art featured in Metropolitan Stories can be viewed on the author’s website:
