Description & Registration

Curious about courier do’s and dont’s? Your role is an exciting but stressful and confusing part of managing collections. As a courier, how can you be better equipped to handle the challenges and curveballs of traveling with objects, especially internationally?

In conjunction with the European Registrars Group, ARCS presents a pair of one-day workshops designed to equip both individual couriers and their trainers with tools needed for success. Attend one or both days to strengthen your couriering skills, and learn how to train others for the journey.

The workshops are based on the Courier Training Program Framework, developed by the European Registrars Group to promote best practices in the museum and gallery sector. This curriculum - now adapted for a US-focus for these workshops - provides attendees with comprehensive manuals for both courier and trainer including training presentations and real-world scenarios. Sessions will be led by framework creators:

  • Desirée Blomberg, Group Manager, Exhibition Coordination & Loans, Moderna Museet, and Board Member, Nordic Registrars Group
  • Kathy Richmond, Registrar, Museum of London

Day One of the workshop will be geared toward professionals responsible for outgoing loans and couriers. This workshop will provide an overview of the courier framework, followed by an in-depth “train the trainer” session that will enable you to train your couriers and potentially develop your own training materials based on the framework.

Day Two will be geared towards both new and experienced couriers. You will be able to put into action the framework program, giving you an in-depth look at the realities of couriering. Sessions will detail the purpose and responsibilities of couriers; how to prepare loans for travel; condition reporting; transit practices by land, air, and water; dealing with the unexpected; and courier do’s and don’ts.

*Please note: Trainers of couriers are encouraged to attend both days to gain this first-hand experience of training with the framework.
